Otley Volunteer Days - Peter Duffy Ltd.

Otley is located on the River Wharfe and has been subject to regular flooding over the past years. In December 2015, over 50 residential properties were flooded prompting the Government to invest up to £2 million in a scheme to protect homes and businesses.

River Stewardship Company have been working with Leeds City Council to deliver a programme of volunteer days and invasive weed management on behalf of principal contractors, Peter Duffy Ltd.

Volunteers have been busy removing a build-up of flood debris from the islands immediately downstream of the weir at Wharfe Meadows. This has included a large amount of timber and ‘wracking’ as well as litter. Tasks have also included crown-lifting trees to improve the flow of water, and Himalayan Balsam pulling with site staff treating invasive Giant Hogweed  and Japanese Knotweed.

Attendees have included members of the community as well as corporate volunteers from the Environment Agency, WSP, and Leeds City Council.
