Greater Manchester Irwell Invasive Surveys
Sep 16, 2022
We are currently working for Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) as part of the Natural Course EU Life Integrated Project, undertaking a full survey of all the main rivers and surrounding areas within the River Irwell catchment in Greater Manchester.
This has seen 3 teams working in the area (which covers around 436km in total linear length!) each week since mid-June 2022 surveying 3 main invasive species - Japanese Knotweed, Giant Hogweed and Himalayan Balsam. Our teams are surveying on foot, in the channel or via boat depending on the individual river and the local environment.
Areas surveyed include the River Tongue in Bolton and the River Roch in Rochdale town centre where we found many patches of Japanese Knotweed.
