Debris 'Wracking' Removal - Environment Agency
Wracking is the term used by the Environment Agency to describe the organic and inorganic debris left over from high water events.
After high water events in 2015 and 2018 deposited significant quantities of debris on the banks of the Rivers Aire, Don and Calder, we were quickly able to mobilise teams to remove these accumulations, reducing the risk of flooding and environmental contamination, and facilitating access for grass cutting.
In 2022, we worked alongside the Environment Agency during post-flood events to either manually or mechanically remove debris from both the River Aire and River Calder and some localised areas of Sheffield. We have used a variety of techniques dependent on ground conditions, access and landowner engagement to ensure the river banks return to their natural state.
